What do I need to do?

If a mishap does occur, you will want to make sure you are paid from your insurer quickly and with the full amount you are due. One thing that will help is to make an inventory of everything you have in the rental. Make a list of each item, and if possible, take a photo or video. Another thing that will help is to keep receipts of any purchases.

Make a special note of items that have a high replacement value or cost. If possible, identify the model and serial number so they can be easily identified.

Store your inventory and receipts in a safe place either in a fire safe, safety deposit box or at someone else's home. This way if something does happen, you will have immediate access to these documents to show your insurance company.

Completing an inventory review will also help you decide how much renters insurance you may need.
