Always make sure all your windows and doors are locked at all times.

All windows should have locks that operate.

All exterior doors should have deadbolt locks.

Make sure all entrances, hallways, stairwells and parking lots are adequately lighted.

Keep garbage cans and boxes away from windows.

Introduce yourself to the neighbors so they know who you are.

Leave a light on in the house or apartment. Use a timer.

Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of a home at the foot of the stairs and in the kitchen.

Smoke detectors should be checked weekly. If they do not work, replace the battery.

Make sure there is more than one exit to your home or apartment.

Fire extinguishers should be installed and visible.

All flammable liquids, painting materials and oily rags should be kept outside in a storage area.

Portable heating devises must be monitored closely. Never leave the room with the device on. Never leave materials or paper too close to the unit.

If electrical outlets are loose or have black around the edge, contact your landlord or an electrician.

Leaking faucets, running toilets & broken showers should be fixed immediately.

Do not store anything at the top or foot of stairwells.

If you have a fireplace, make sure it is cleaned before using.

Do not let garbage or recycling pile up inside or outside of the house or you will get rodents.

Make sure the furnace and water heater is checked annually to avoid carbon monoxide leaks.

Overgrown bushes around entrance ways should be trimmed.

Keep expensive belongings like stereos, tvs, CDs etc.. out of view of windows.

During party's, put your valuables in a safe place.

Do not have too many people on a balcony or porch that can not support them.

Make sure porch/deck railings are secure.

Shovel snow from walkways and porches immediately.

At night, don't travel alone. Where bright clothes.

Don't drink and drive!

Be smart.
